GIS for Effective Winter Operations
Discover how the City of Barrie is using geospatial technology to track their snowplows and inform the public about winter maintenance—essential when you’re a city that receives over 225 cm of snow per year! With an average of 46 winter snow events to deal with each season, the City needed a way to track their winter maintenance activities that could be updated as needed to reflect changing conditions. The City’s GIS Operations group worked with Esri Canada’s Professional Services team to create something that would allow them to do exactly that. Now, Barrie’s GeoTab AVL data for city and contractor plows is processed by ArcGIS GeoEvent Server, then fed to a simple, customizable, interactive webmap made in ArcGIS Experience Builder. Members of the public and City of Barrie staff are now able to view plows’ approximate location and vehicle status on the City’s public app, reducing the number of calls to the City’s service centre and supporting snow removal contractors with the most accurate, up-to-date information.
