GIS for Road Safety #VisionZero #GIS

Inspired by Vision Zero, a strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries, Durham Region’s Strategic Road Safety Action Plan aims to reduce collision severity in the Region. The Region’s geographic information systems (GIS) team is using the network screening capabilities of Esri’s advanced geospatial technology to examine Durham Region’s road network for road safety issues and high-collision locations. This analysis then allows them to identify high-priority safety improvements. By feeding this data into ArcGIS Dashboards, the team is then able to offer Region decision-makers and traffic engineers an at-a-glance summary of highest-risk locations, proposed improvements and related statistical insights. Decisions about safety improvements can be made more efficiently, benefiting pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike. Watch Shivani Singh’s full-length presentation to discover this part of Durham Region’s journey toward Vision Zero.
