Virtual ArcGIS workshops for K-12 educators

Whether you are an ArcGIS beginner or a current user, there is a virtual workshop for you. Learn how you can integrate ArcGIS tools into your teaching with one of our preset workshops or contact us to customize one based on your learning requirements.

With a new year comes new learning opportunities. We want you to know that all our workshops can be facilitated virtually. Discover what we have put together for K-12 educators.

The virtual workshops can either be hosted on our virtual meeting software, Microsoft Teams or using your school/school board’s meeting software. We are flexible with the length of the workshops and can adapt these to meet your professional learning needs. We recommend between 60 – 180 minutes for most workshops. There are many options for self-guided learning, too.

Workshop 1 – Empower your students to explore their world with ArcGIS Online

Focused on Esri Canada K-12 resources.

This workshop will explore free and curriculum-specific resources for ArcGIS Online mapping software across various grades and subjects within your provincial/territorial curriculum. With these resources, students can problem solve by asking relevant local and global questions, acquire and analyse data, and communicate their findings using maps. In this session, you will learn how to incorporate our resources and software into your teaching.

Workshop 2: Bring your map to life with ArcGIS

Focused on ArcGIS Map Viewer.

ArcGIS Online is a cross-curricular GIS tool that strengthens spatial literacy and supports inquiry-based learning. With ArcGIS Online, students are actively engaged in creating, sharing and analyzing digital maps, story maps, data, and apps.  You will leave this workshop with hands-on training in creating maps using your own data and authoritative, current data.

Workshop 3: Building a sense of place and community with free digital tools

Focused on ArcGIS Survey123.

In this hands-on session, educators will learn how to create a collaborative field study using Survey123, a free, Web-based digital survey tool in Esri’s ArcGIS Online software. With this, students can create interactive surveys that allow them to collect data using their preferred device whether at home, at school, or outside in the community. A survey is a great way to gather primary source data on a community’s people and environment. You will also learn how to communicate the results of the survey, using Esri’s interactive tools.

Workshop 4: Teaching & Learning with ArcGIS StoryMaps

Focused on ArcGIS StoryMaps and their use in teaching.

Story Maps are an engaging storytelling tool that incorporates the use of maps, text, videos, photographs and other media. Find out how you can engage and inspire your students using the ArcGIS StoryMaps builder to visualize and share your data. In this session, you will learn why, where, and how to use story maps in your teaching, and how to create them.

In this workshop, you will get started with Story Maps and learn how you can use them in your teaching.

Workshop 5: Making sense of the world through data

Focused on ArcGIS Dashboards.

Whether you are collecting your own data or using the freely available authoritative data in ArcGIS Online, a dashboard is a great way to monitor local and global events, ask questions, and see patterns and trends. In this session, educators will use ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Dashboards to learn how to create interactive dashboards with maps, charts, histograms, and gauges based on live-updating data and how students can use maps and dashboards in various curriculum areas.
