Visualizing SketchUp Models in ArcGIS Urban
With more local governments and private development firms migrating to 3D models to envision what new development will look like, the need to utilize the models in GIS is becoming more and more of a necessity. By using ArcGIS Urban, you’re able to upload these 3D models to visualize different project scenarios and assess shadow and viewshed on the surrounding environment to better understand the real-world impacts of potential development. In this walkthrough, we will review the steps for exporting your SketchUp models, importing the model into ArcGIS Pro, sharing everything to ArcGIS Online, and finally adding the published model as a scenario to an ArcGIS Urban project.

Hot tip: Quick tips to ensure your web apps are mobile ready
Configure apps with mobile in mind. In 2018, mobile devices accounted for over 50% of website visits. Mobile devices comprised over 40% of the total time spent online. If your app is linked or embedded in any news or media site, half your audience could potentially view it on a mobile device. To accommodate the shift in screen size, we are designing ArcGIS Configurable Apps with a mobile-first approach. We design with this question in mind: How will the app look on the smallest screen? In this article, we share some tips on how to ensure your app is mobile ready!

Introducing the Community Map of Canada Style of the Month
New year, new maps. It’s the start of the new year and the start of something new at Community Maps. For the next 12 months, we will feature a new, rotating style – the Community Maps Style of the Month.
App of the Month: COSMOS
City of Surrey is British Columbia’s second-largest city, next to Vancouver, and has more than 520,000 residents. It supports its Smart City Strategy by using geographic information system (GIS) technology to improve the delivery of municipal services. The City needed a way to display and give access to large sets of cadastral data for different types of audiences. Since most of these datasets were spatial, the City leveraged their existing spatial data infrastructure and ArcGIS API for JavaScript to build COSMOS, a customized application that allows the public to explore over 200 layers of information, annotate their own maps and search for underground infrastructure near their property.
Announcing the winners of the 2019 StoryMapper of the Year competition
“Pancakes and Silver” by Stanford University Libraries took the grand prize in Esri’s 2019 StoryMapper of the Year competition. The story, made with the new ArcGIS StoryMaps builder, describes the use of 21st-century technology to cast a new light on 19th-century silver mines in Nevada’s Comstock lode.
The story map and four runners-up were chosen from among hundreds of competition entries on a broad diversity of topics and created by government agencies, nonprofit organizations, research institutions, and passionate individuals. The 2019 StoryMapper of the Year competition was the first to spotlight stories created using ArcGIS StoryMaps, Esri’s second-generation storytelling app. Another first was the addition of cash prizes, with contestants required to describe how their prize money would be used for social benefit.
Pro or Online? Part 1: Publishing Hosted Feature Layers from ArcGIS Online
We use both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Pro to publish hosted feature layers. The workflow that we choose depends on the complexity of the dataset and symbology as well as the expected update frequency. This blog will discuss publishing hosted feature layers in ArcGIS Online.
Pro or Online? Part 2: Publishing Hosted Feature Layers from ArcGIS Pro
This is the second part of a blog series on publishing hosted feature layers by Rich Nauman from Esri’s Living Atlas Environment Team.
The Benefits of Using Enterprise Logins for ArcGIS Online
Many of you are already using enterprise logins with ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise for one set of credentials to sign in to multiple accounts using Security Assertion Mark-up Language (SAML) authentication. We’ve seen significant growth in organizations enabling this capability as it allows administrators to give their members a convenient way to use the same enterprise username and password across multiple ArcGIS organizations.
Better colors for better mapping
The ArcGIS API for JavaScript documentation added two guide pages to help you make smarter color choices while designing your maps.
Put Your Best Thumbnail Forward
First impressions are important—whether it’s made during a job interview, a first meeting with a prospective client, or a visit to a company website. While we shouldn’t necessarily judge a book by its cover, people are visually oriented, and what we initially see—for example, a thumbnail of a map in ArcGIS Online—can affect what we expect from the content of the map itself.
Australian State Automated Large-Area Land Classification with Machine Learning
The state of Queensland, in northeastern Australia, is remarkably geographically diverse. It includes coastal rain forests, widespread eucalypt and acacia woodlands, tropical savannas, ephemeral inland rivers, deserts, and rich agricultural belts. With an area of 1,730,000 square kilometers (668,000 square miles), it is approximately seven times the size of Great Britain.
