Prepare for the Next Major ArcGIS Online Security Advancement Now
While all ArcGIS Online organizations established after September 2018 only allow HTTPS communication (encrypted), we still have many pre-existing organizations who have chosen not to utilize HTTPS only for their web services. If your ArcGIS Online organization is already utilizing HTTPS and you don’t have any external systems making requests to HTTP-based services, then this change will be a non-event for you. For customers who do not yet enforce HTTPS, please begin preparing now for when ArcGIS Online enforces HTTPS Only for all organizations with the March 2020 update of ArcGIS Online. This change is being made to improve ArcGIS Online web security communication and to meet security requirements mandated by customers, such as site-wide enforcement of HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS). Visit Trust ArcGIS site to access the “ArcGIS Online Security Advisor” tool (top right corner of web page) which includes a check for HTTP references in an ArcGIS Online subscription. Please run this tool against your ArcGIS Online Organization. The ArcGIS Online setting of allowing access to the organization through HTTPS only is not linked to ArcGIS Hub at this time. Check here for details and how to set a Hub site to HTTPS
Damage assessment using deep learning in ArcGIS
At this year’s Esri User Conference plenary session, the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) demonstrated the use of deep learning capabilities in ArcGIS to perform automated damage assessment of homes after the devastating Woolsey fire. This work was a collaborative prototype between Esri and USAA to show the art of the possible in doing this type of damage assessment using the ArcGIS platform.
FAQ: What's New in Esri Vector Basemaps?
The August 2019 update to the Esri Vector Basemaps includes new data from Esri’s commercial provider, open sources and community contributors. Esri also released a new vector National Geographic Style map along with the Navigation (Dark Mode) map and Watercolour creative style.
Hot tip: How to batch publish in ArcGIS
Beginning with 10.7.1, you can publish layers in bulk from a data store item in the portal. You can also synchronize the data store item and layers within the portal. Any changes in content, feature classes and tables will be updated during the sync. This new functionality will make batch publishing from your database a breeze!

App of the Month: Map of Accident-Prone Road Segments
The hardest part of creating maps and applications that cater to a wide range of users is coming up with the data. First, you need to find and retrieve the data, clean it (data can be messy sometimes, and it takes an analyst to translate the data into something meaningful) and organize it. This process is exactly what the Regional County Municipality of Brome-Missisquoi follows to keep their data well maintained for building applications like August’s App of the Month, Cartographie des tronçons routiers accidentogènes, which maps the location of accidents for the public to see.
What is the future of ArcPad?
ArcPad will be retired on December 31, 2020. ArcPad fills a necessary position in Esri's product offering by enabling GIS users to work with the many high-accuracy and rugged field devices running on Windows Mobile/Windows CE. But, it is important to note that ArcPad is a mature product that's closely tied to Windows Mobile, and Microsoft has stopped development for the Windows Mobile/Windows CE platform. As such, any future updates to ArcPad will be focused on critical bug fixes, and new app development will be focused on modern platforms (iOS, Android and Windows 10) and products such as Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS and AppStudio for ArcGIS. See the “What is the future of ArcPad?” question on the ArcPad Common Questions page.
Update to ArcGIS Enterprise Product Lifecycle
The latest release of ArcGIS Enterprise includes an important update to the support given to the product. The ArcGIS Enterprise product lifecycle will now include short-term support (STS) and long-term support (LTS) releases. A product lifecycle defines the number of years that technical and software support such as patches and other security updates are made available.
Training
Getting Started with Asset Management Using ArcGIS
This course demonstrates how ArcGIS provides a location-centric foundation for asset management. Understand how the geodatabase enables maintenance of accurate, accessible data; analysis of that data to make sound, evidence-based decisions; and the use of web apps to dynamically engage your staff, stakeholders and the public. The course also offers basic theory for those new to asset management and simple exercises for participants just getting started with ArcGIS.
