Let’s do data science! Multidimensional analysis in ArcGIS Pro
In ArcGIS Pro, you can work with scientific data in multiple formats: netCDF, GRIB or HDF layers, space-time cubes, mosaic datasets, or, with the release of ArcGIS Pro 2.4, you can use multidimensional raster datasets in Cloud Raster Format (CRF). In this post we will highlight all the new multidimensional functionality that is available in ArcGIS Pro 2.4.

Prepare for the Next Major ArcGIS Online Security Advancement Now
While all ArcGIS Online organizations established after September 2018 only allow HTTPS communication (encrypted), we still have many pre-existing organizations who have chosen not to utilize HTTPS only for their web services.  If your ArcGIS Online organization is already utilizing HTTPS and you don’t have any external systems making requests to HTTP-based services, then this change will be a non-event for you. For customers who do not yet enforce HTTPS, please begin preparing now for when ArcGIS Online enforces HTTPS Only for all organizations with the March 2020 update of ArcGIS Online. This change is being made to improve ArcGIS Online web security communication and to meet security requirements mandated by customers, such as site-wide enforcement of HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS). Visit Trust ArcGIS site to access the “ArcGIS Online Security Advisor” tool (top right corner of web page) which includes a check for HTTP references in an ArcGIS Online subscription. Please run this tool against your ArcGIS Online Organization. The ArcGIS Online setting of allowing access to the organization through HTTPS only is not linked to ArcGIS Hub at this time. Check here for details and how to set a Hub site to HTTPS

Homage to a Classic Map
Warren Davison is a GIS Analyst for the city of Waterloo, Ontario (and occasional guest blogger; see exhibits A, B, and C). Warren creates stunning maps and generously shares his demystifying process and re-usable resources with the mapping community. Recently, Warren undertook a cartographic challenge to re-create a Richard Edes Harrison classic, pushing the artistic capabilities of ArcGIS Pro to eye-watering extents.

FAQ:  How do you create custom dictionary styles for ArcGIS?
For the 100.6.0 release of ArcGIS Runtime SDK for .NET, a product engineer for ArcGIS Runtime SDK was tasked with writing documentation for using dictionary styles. He used this as an opportunity to create his own custom dictionary style. As a casual ArcGIS Pro user and someone who’d sooner peek into a badger den than crack open an SQLite database, he was anticipating a little discomfort. Ultimately, he found it fairly easy and actually a lot of fun to implement. He has described his steps here to help you get started and inspire you to find a use for dictionary styles in your projects.

Hot tip:  Use Living Atlas to create a custom basemap gallery
ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World is an evolving collection of authoritative, curated, ready-to-use global geographic information from Esri and the GIS user community. It includes imagery, basemaps, demographics and lifestyle, landscape, boundaries and places, transportation, earth observations, urban systems, oceans and historical maps that can be combined with your own data to create maps, scenes and apps and to perform analysis.

Service Packs, Patches & User Resources

Mapping and Charting Solutions 10.7.1 Patch 1 (Desktop | Server)
This is a general cumulative maintenance patch for the Mapping and Charting Solutions including; ArcGIS for Aviation (Desktop), ArcGIS for Maritime: Bathymetry (Desktop), ArcGIS for Maritime: Charting (Desktop), ArcGIS for Maritime: Server, Esri Defense Mapping for (Desktop, Server), and Esri Production Mapping for (Desktop, Server). Please download and install this patch at your earliest convenience.

ArcGIS Location Referencing 10.5.1 Patch 2
This patch contains a maintenance fix to Location Referencing: Roads and Highways for Desktop. Performing a cartographic realignment that is larger than the M tolerance but smaller than the default XY tolerance when the LRS network is configured to update the measure for cartographic realignments does not create a calibrate edit log record, which causes incorrect event behaviors to be applied.

ArcGIS Server 10.6.1 General Geocoding Patch
If you have created a locator using the Create Locator Geoprocessing Tool in ArcGIS Pro and published the locator to ArcGIS Server, this patch resolves limitations related to these types of locators.

ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine, Server) Support for Oracle 19c Patch
This patch enables Oracle 19c database support for ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, and ArcGIS Server 10.7.1 and 10.6.1 clients.

ArcGIS (Desktop, Engine, Server) 10.6.1 Ortho Mapping Patch
This patch fixes a failure caused by a missing default elevation value when performing a block adjustment with the Ortho Maker app.

ArcGIS Business Analyst Desktop Address Coder Patch
The ArcGIS Business Analyst Address Coder Patch addresses an issue with Address Coder data appending, specific to the US_Esri_2019 dataset. In some cases, selecting variables from this dataset for appending during the geocoding process would return incorrect results. Installing this patch will eliminate this potential problem.

ArcGIS GeoEnrichment Server 2019 USA Data Update Patch
The 2019 USA data update for Business Analyst Enterprise includes new five year projected Customer Expenditure variables. These variables are calculated incorrectly for versions 10.7 and 10.7.1 of the GeoEnrichment Server software.

App of the Month: Concrete Jungle: Urban Expansion and the Rise of the Megacity
September’s App of the Month, Concrete Jungle: Urban Expansion and the Rise of the Megacity by Spencer Elford, a student from McMaster University, explores megacities and how the urban environment has shaped our modern world. Concrete Jungle is one of the more compelling story maps in terms of content as well as interactive experience. It uses the Story Map Journal template, which allows a combination of multimedia to go with the narrative of Spencer’s research. He put a lot of effort into creating, not just one, but multiple web applications in his story map – taking advantage of the embed capability in the classic Esri Story Maps.

IDC InfoDoc: Winning with Location Intelligence
A new study from IDC Canada, sponsored by Esri Canada, indicates that commitment to a set of 14 essential practices differentiates organizations that use geospatial data and analytics to compete and win. The study revealed that organizations generally fall into one of five categories of location intelligence proficiency: Lagging, Developing, Emerging, Expanding and Advanced. Advanced organizations with focused geospatial strategies consistently outperformed other organizations, reporting (on average) an 18% improvement in business outcomes realized in the past two years – nearly double what many lagging organizations reported.

What is the future of ArcPad?
ArcPad will be retired on December 31, 2020. ArcPad fills a necessary position in Esri's product offering by enabling GIS users to work with the many high-accuracy and rugged field devices running on Windows Mobile/Windows CE. But, it is important to note that ArcPad is a mature product that's closely tied to Windows Mobile, and Microsoft has stopped development for the Windows Mobile/Windows CE platform. As such, any future updates to ArcPad will be focused on critical bug fixes, and new app development will be focused on modern platforms (iOS, Android and Windows 10) and products such as Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123 for ArcGIS and AppStudio for ArcGIS. See the “What is the future of ArcPad?” question on the ArcPad Common Questions page.

Update to ArcGIS Enterprise Product Lifecycle
The latest release of ArcGIS Enterprise includes an important update to the support given to the product. The ArcGIS Enterprise product lifecycle will now include short-term support (STS) and long-term support (LTS) releases. A product lifecycle defines the number of years that technical and software support such as patches and other security updates are made available.

It's time to update your ArcGIS License Manager!
The ArcGIS License Manager 2019.0 is available. This update addresses several vulnerabilities in Flexera FlexNet Publisher that are exploitable prior to FlexNet Publisher 11.16.2.

Refining search capabilities in your Configurable Apps
Many configurable apps include a search tool so users can find addresses and features in the app. By default, the search tool is configured to search all sources in your map. You can fine-tune the search options to find only the most relevant results. This blog demonstrates three common ways to refine search functionality so your audience can easily discover the right information.

Register your GIS Day event and get 5 ArcGIS for Personal Use licenses!
GIS Day is on November 13. Esri would like to support your local GIS community by extending five ArcGIS for Personal Use licenses to each GIS Day host who registers their event on the Esri website. It is up to each host how they would like to distribute these five licenses. Licenses must be redeemed by January 13, 2020.
