Map of the Month: Átl’ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound Marine Reference Guide
The Howe Sound/Átl’ḵa7tsem Marine Reference Guide pulls together information that describes Átl’ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound's aquatic ecology, biophysical environmental boundaries and human uses to support efforts to manage the myriad of anthropogenic pressures. These data can support decision making, collaborative management, marine spatial planning (MSP) and community engagement. This map upholds local, Indigenous and western scientific knowledge, centralizes data previously managed by discrete entities and visualizes where aquatic values and pressures overlap in space. The map has already informed the designation of grassroots marine conservation areas and is supporting MSP processes led by the Squamish Nation and other regional governments.

Community Map of Canada - Style of the Month: "Simply Snow"
Entering December, it becomes the time of year where most of Canada is covered in a blanket of snow, and snow tires and snow plowing schedules become important! As much as the Community Map of Canada seeks to be a current, data-based representation of Canadian communities, this Style of the Month for December seeks to represent what most of Canada looks like from above these days. This basemap style shows Canada with a white colour palette as if covered by snow. The land mass and parks are a cool snowy colour, water bodies are an icy blue, and highway shields are snow-capped. Most notably, this basemap style shows unplowed streets as covered in snow (white) so that communities can symbolize them regularly as roads (dark) once the snow has been cleared. This style was developed with snow-clearing apps in mind because many municipalities use GIS and mapping applications to track snow plowing and parking allowance.

The Community Map of Canada can be customized in the ArcGIS Vector Tile Style Editor to suit any of your custom basemapping needs and can be used in apps and maps across the ArcGIS suite. Find this basemap and more in the custom basemap gallery. And next time you need a winter-themed basemap for a snow-clearing project, look no further than this style, created by Community Mapper Amy Hayes.

An image of a wintery and snowy-themed base map of Canada. The land mass is a white colour and the water bodies and oceans are a steely blue. There is an inset map in the bottom left-hand corner showing a closer extent of the map. The inset map is showing an intersection of highways, which are white-coloured, and the highway symbols which are regular highway shields which appear to be covered in snow at the top of the sign.
