Modern Land Management at Manitoba Hydro
Manitoba Hydro has transformed its land management processes using Esri's GIS technology. These advancements have led to improved efficiency, enhanced customer experience, and more informed decision-making.
Manitoba Hydro is a provincial Crown Corporation and one of Canada's largest integrated electricity and natural gas distribution utilities. They are a leader in providing renewable energy and clean-burning natural gas. They also trade electricity within four Midwestern United States and Canada wholesale markets. They serve 608,554 electric customers and 293,256 natural gas customers.
The Manitoba Hydro Property Department is tasked with the mission-critical responsibility of managing all ROW’s and Easements in its operating territory. This task includes planning for, establishing (surveying mapping, describing and registering), maintaining and retiring thousands of land rights across Manitoba. In addition to supporting Manitoba Hydro’s operating infrastructure, these daily activities also support the thousands of development activities (such as residential, commercial and public infrastructure development) that take place across Manitoba each year.
With all of this economic development activity depending upon it, there is a critical need for the Property Department to support its internal and external stakeholders efficiently, transparently and in a very timely manner. This need is being further amplified by the increasing pressures (across Canada) to make the land development process more efficient and timely.
In response to COVID-19, Manitoba Hydro embraced digital solutions to revolutionize its land management processes. Utilizing ArcGIS Hub, ArcGIS StoryMaps, ArcGIS Dashboards, and ArcGIS Server to optimize its processes, Manitoba Hydro focused on digital solutions including web GIS to enhance customer engagement. One of the key outcomes of this was the development of the Manitoba Hydro Land Management site, which serves as an interface for customers seeking property services. The application serves as a valuable resource for land developers and landowners seeking real-time updates from Manitoba Hydro on their subdivision applications and easement requirements. These applications have facilitated the digitization of customer engagement and streamlined the process of delivering property services.
