Basemap updates for Canada – June 2018

The ArcGIS Online imagery and vector tile basemaps were updated with many Canadian contributions in June.

Two contributors provided updated imagery for their areas that have significantly improved the imagery basemap available on ArcGIS Online. Barrie, ON provided 10 cm imagery from 2016 through their open data site, and Guelph, ON provided 12 cm imagery from 2017.

Barrie’s imagery contribution (right) is an improvement to the existing imagery basemap (left) in terms of clarity and resolution.

Paul Heersink is a cartographer and Program Manager of Esri Canada’s Roads & Addresses Program: an initiative that is aiming to build a seamless topographic basemap using contributor data. He has over 25 years of cartographic experience, working in both the public and private sectors. Paul has always been interested in mapping and drew his own atlas at the age of 10. He took a detour in his career through the fields of psychology and social work before returning to cartography.
