Map of the Month: Forest Fires in Québec, 2002–2021: Cumulative Number and Area
From 2002 to 2021, the number of fires in Québec has varied greatly from year to year. The average is 544 fires per year. The average area affected annually is 67,628 hectares. The following map represents forest fires during this period using a cumulative approach based on a hexagonal grid. So, the Québec territory was divided into tessellated hexagons of 25,000 hectares. For each hexagon, the total number of fires that occurred as well as the total area burned were calculated and classified. This map therefore makes it possible to visualize the places where the largest fires occurred, as well as the occurrences of fires during this period.

Community Map of Canada - Style of the Month: "Golf Course"
This "Summer in Full Swing" basemap style for August 2023 was created by Tyler Scuralli, golf enthusiast and Community Map of Canada GIS Consultant. This basemap style uses flag and hole symbology for capital cities and a golf tee for Canada’s country label. A grassy green and sandy beige colour palette has been chosen to resemble a golf course and, visible at a larger scale, highway shields have been changed to display the route number atop golf balls.

Creating your own custom basemap symbology and style feels like getting a hole in one (although you're actually able to infinitely customize the appearance of each layer of data in the basemap, not just one), so you too can score your perfect basemap style using the ArcGIS Vector Tile Style Editor tool!

You can explore the August Style of the Month and more in our style gallery!

A map of Canada showing the full extent of the country. The oceans are a bright blue colour and the land mass is a vivid green. Capital cities are symbolized with red flags golf hole flags and the country label for Canada is in the middle of the country and is symbolized with a golf ball atop a tee.
