City of Edmonton to host 2017 Canadian Open Data Summit

The City of Edmonton has been named host of the Canadian Open Data Summit in May 2017. Edmonton will see approximately 500 national leaders representing the public, private and non-profit sectors converge on the city to discuss best practices and lessons around using data at the Canadian Open Data Summit.

Esri User Conference 2016 plenary videos now available

By all accounts, the 2016 edition of the Esri User Conference was a great success. The plenary sessions are now available for viewing online. The sessions covered topics such as Esri’s vision, success stories, updates and news on the latest technology, thought leaders tackling world issues and motivation topics.

2016 European Transportation GIS Summit presentations available online

The European Transportation GIS Summit held in May brought together GIS experts from road, rail, aviation, public transport, maritime and logistics transportation organizations in Europe and beyond to learn from each other's challenges and successes. Check out the presentations online.

European Commission releases the 2016 "European Digital Progress Report"

The European Commission has just released a report on digital progress in the EU. The analysis shows that Member States are at very different stages in the development of the digital economy; some, for example, such as the Nordic countries, are among the most advanced in the world, while others still have a lot of catching up to do.

About the Author

Gordon Plunkett is the Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) Director at Esri Canada. He has more than 30 years of experience in GIS and Remote Sensing in both the public and private sectors. He currently sits as a member of the Community Map of Canada Steering Committee, GeoAlliance Canada Interim Board of Directors, the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Technical Committee, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) Committee on Geomatics, the University of Laval Convergence Network Advisory Committee and the Advisory Board to the Carleton University Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre. During his career, Gordon has worked on projects in more than 20 countries and has contributed to numerous scientific conferences and publications. At Esri Canada, he is responsible for developing and supporting the company’s SDI vision, initiatives and outreach, including producing content for the SDI blog.
